With another Ebola outbreak underway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a vaccination campaign targeting health workers began in the east of the country this week.
There was progress in two polio-endemic countries, with Nigeria approving a $150 million World Bank loan to fight the disease, and Pakistan launching a vaccination campaign to reach nearly 20 million children.
Gavi CEO, Dr Seth Berkley, wrote about the role of vaccines in preventing cancer, whilst new research showed that catch-up vaccinations against HPV can be effective for women up to the age of 20. Elsewhere, Gavi’s Deputy CEO, Anuradha Gupta, explained why getting more accurate data is the first step to reaching more children with life-saving vaccines.
Finally, in vaccine research this week, scientists looked at uptake of rotavirus and pneumococcal vaccines in Malawi and signs of hope are emerging in efforts towards developing a universal flu vaccine.
