In the week that Ebola spread to a new province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Lancet took stock of current progress in preventing Ebola by vaccination, and Nature argued that we are better prepared than ever before. Meanwhile, the city of Goma near DRC’s Rwandan border is bracing itself for the disease.

A new initiative, launched this week by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Last Mile Health and Living Goods, will scale up immunisation across Africa through digitally-empowered community health projects. The project will bring vaccination to eight million people living in remote areas across Liberia, Uganda and Kenya.

Whilst a new polio case was detected in southern Afghanistan this week, Rotary announced US$ 96.5 million to end the disease. Meanwhile, with a drug-resistant typhoid outbreak triggering a level 2 alert in Pakistan, the Lancet estimated the impact of antimicrobial resistance.
