This week in vaccines
31st October 2015
This week began with sobering news of an earthquake in Afghanistan and surrounding areas. As the humanitarian response kicked in on Tuesday, Afghan health authorities showed their commitment to ensuring no interruption in the delivery of life-saving vaccines by opening a special storage facility at Kabul Airport.
Celebrations from World Polio Day spilled over into this week, with immunisation fans marking the 101st birthday of Dr Jonas Salk — pioneer of the inactivated polio vaccine in 1950s.
Conversation around the newly developed malaria vaccine also continued, after the World Health Organisation called for more real-world evidence of how developing countries will combine the vaccine with existing measures.
